Also known as percutaneous endoscopic discectomy, laser disc decompression is a procedure in which a laser is used to remove the portion of a vertebral disc that is impinging upon the nearby nerve or nerve root and causing inflammation and irritation.

How Is Laser Disc Decompression Performed?
At Laser Spine Institute (LSI), our expert surgeons perform this procedure using the latest endoscopic technology. Using local anesthetic and IV sedation rather than general anesthesia, they make a small incision in the back and insert a Depuy tube, slipping larger and larger ones over it and removing the smaller ones until the final tube is in place. By using tubes of increasing size and inserting the camera, laser, and other tools through the final tube, they are able to slowly and gently push muscle aside and get the surgical instruments to the afflicted area without cutting or tearing muscle or creating a large incision. Once the camera is in place, the surgeons use a large screen showing the camera’s view to analyze the disc, see what is compressing the nerve, and remove the offending tissue with the laser. The surgeons then slowly remove the tube and close the incision. The entire procedure usually takes under an hour, and in most cases the patient is released within one to two hours.
