Disc Decompression Therapy
Also known as spinal decompression, disc decompression therapy is a nonsurgical procedure used to help relieve pressure on the vertebral discs in an effort to reduce or eliminate back and neck pain caused by nerve compression. This therapy uses a special traction machine that is designed to mimic the feel and result of hands-on clinician care. Once the patient is strapped into the machine, it gently pulls and manipulates the patient’s upper and lower body to create a vacuum within the afflicted disc to “suck in” the herniated material or bulge. By minimizing or eliminating the herniation or bulge, the therapy aims to relieve any pressure the disc was putting on nearby nerves. Disc decompression therapy is just one of many conservative treatments that can be used for back and neck pain due to degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, or bulging disc.
Other treatments include:
- Physical therapy
- Stretching
- Massage
- Over the counter medicine
- Prescription painkillers
- Acupuncture
- Spinal steroid injections
What If Disc Decompression Therapy Doesn’t Work?
If you’ve tried spinal decompression and other conservative treatment options without success, and your doctor has recommended surgery, then an endoscopic procedure at Laser Spine Institute (LSI) may be a safer and more effective alternative to traditional surgery. Our percutaneous laser disc decompression removes the portion of the disc that is putting pressure on the nerve or spinal cord to relieve pain. This minimally invasive procedure takes just 30-45 minutes to perform and is done on an outpatient basis so you can get your life back quicker than with traditional surgery.
